Obesity is a complex disease that is both chronic and relapsing. Evidence shows overwhelmingly that obesity is a cause of multiple diseases, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and osteoarthritis, and is also a cause of premature mortality. Further, obesity is associated with an impaired quality of life, reduced fertility, workplace absenteeism, significant economic costs and bias, discrimination and stigma.

The foundation of obesity treatment is behavioural therapy in combination with dietary intervention and an increase in physical activity. However, as research and the individual experience of people with obesity show that these treatments are frequently ineffective for long-term weight loss, other medical and surgical options have become available. These options are supported with high-quality evidence and are well-tolerated by patients.

Given the high prevalence of obesity, the complex aetiology and associated co-morbidity, and the treatment components available, it is of paramount importance that individuals living with obesity have the support of healthcare professionals with an advanced level of education and training in the field of obesity and weight management.

Our Masters and Postgraduate Diploma programmes in Obesity and Weight Management are designed for healthcare professionals who wish to specialise in obesity and weight management or to gain a greater understanding of obesity and its treatment in the context of other medical specialisms.
