Endocrinology is perceived by many as an esoteric subject dealing with rarities. However, it's less well appreciated that endocrine knowledge is important to the generalist as endocrine disease is a common presenting problem in primary care. All allied health professionals are exposed to patients with endocrine-related disorders. Primary care physicians manage many patients with overt endocrine disorders, with the management of hypothyroidism also featured in the GMS contract.

Our Postgraduate Diploma and Masters programme aims to create professionals who can independently access information and use the information to improve understanding of endocrine care. It will prepare students to take a leadership role in the global context of endocrinology. Both our Postgraduate Diploma course and our MSc course have been accredited by the Royal College of General Practioners (RCGP).

The Postgraduate Diploma and MSc course is aimed at General Practitioners, Practice Nurses/ Specialist Nurses, Pharmacists, Dieticians and Podiatrists. These roles are evolving with increasing demand amongst these specialists for a postgraduate qualification to help support their professional learning and clinical development.

Students may apply for the MSc in Endocrinology as a two year course, firstly completing the Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), followed by the MSc (60 credits).

Delivered over 1 year the online part time distance learning Postgraduate Diploma course is especially developed for busy health professionals. Formatted in 6 modules, each of 6 weeks duration; the course is designed to be practical and clinically focused.

MSc In Endocrinology

The MSc runs over 1 calendar year. Starting with an initial 12 week online module to develop their skills in critical appraisal and knowledge of research methodologies, the students then go on to complete a 1,500 word proposal and 10,500 word professional project.

What is Endocrinology?

Endocrinology is a study of the endocrine system including its diseases, secretions and conditions that impact hormonal imbalance. The endocrine system is comprised of glands that secrete hormones into the circulatory system.

The hormones secreted by the endocrine system influence key aspects of human development and body function such as helping to maintain healthy muscle and bone mass, lactation in females, stress, blood pressure, metabolism and testosterone.

The endocrine system can be influenced by a number of factors including:

Some cells can become damaged during the aging process and some are genetically programmed to alter. Aging can impact on hormone production and secretion, natural rhythms in body functions, hormone levels and metabolism and target cell or target tissue response to hormones.

A stress response can influence kidney, heart, liver and endocrine system function and can be triggered by a mental or physical stressor. A stress response can be caused by anything from allergic reactions to trauma and severe illness.

Chronic diseases can impact the body’s ability to break down hormones. Problems arise when a person has too much or too little of a hormone so the ability to breakdown hormones plays a key role in a healthy hormone balance.

EDCs (Environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals) are substances that are external to the body that can interfere with the endocrine system. EDCs can:-

  • Mimic binding at the target cell receptor
  • Start the same process that a natural hormone would
  • Block hormone binding
  • Interfere with production, storage, transport, elimination and release of natural hormones.

Genes are contained within chromosomes and each have a specific function. When a chromosome is damaged or missing, or when there is an extra chromosome, a person can develop diseases or conditions that effect the endocrine system and the production and function of hormones.

An endocrinologist’s role is to diagnose and treat problems in the endocrine system including recognising and treating:-

  • Hormone imbalances
  • Damage to the endocrine glands
  • Diseases that impact the endocrine system
  • Environmental factors that may be effecting hormone balance

Much of the treatment deployed by an endocrinologist will form the basis for ongoing research with the goal of improving the treatment of hormone imbalances and development of new drugs.
